A Visit to a Buddhist Monastery in Yamuna Nagar
By Mithilesh Mohan Joshi, MBBS Student
Lately, I had an exceptional chance to spend a day with the monks at a beautiful Buddhist monastery in Yamuna Nagar, and this allowed me to learn more about Buddhism and the monk’s lifestyle.
There were six monks in the monastery who came from different countries: Ajahn Gunakaro from Nepal, Ajahn Ñāṇavaro from the UK, Bhante Mahāpañño from India, Bhante Anavajjo from Israel, Bhante Parakkammo from India, and Bhante Sirimanto from Canada.
Although they came from different corners of the world, they all had a special tranquility, modesty, and harmony that could be felt instantly. Those who completed 10 years were called Ajahn. And then there was the experienced meditative researcher, Prof. P. L. Dhar.
Most of my time there was spent with Prof. Dhar, his words and ideas greatly impacted me.
He showed me the new way to look at meditation as not only the silent practice but also as the process of watching your own thoughts and letting them go
as they try to persist in your head .Moreover, he taught me the value of patience; one can grow through constant awareness rather than through fast changes.
The whole day passed quietly; there was almost no contact with the outer world, and I had a great chance to forget everything around and to feel peace and harmony of the monastery. Isolation that took place there was very inspiring.
All in all, my stay in the monastery was extremely beneficial to me. I gained a lot of peace, tranquility, and understanding of the monastic way of life.
