Visiting Arañña Saṅghārāma Vihāra

Aranya Sangharama now hosts a resident monastic community and offers a unique opportunity for a limited number of individuals to experience the daily schedule of monastic life.

How to Visit
Lay practitioners interested in spending a few days at Sangharama and participating in the daily schedule are encouraged to email [email protected] with their preferred dates.

Daily Schedule
Visitors are expected to follow the regular monastery schedule, which includes:

  • 5:30 AM – 7:00 AM: Morning chanting and meditation
  • 7:00 AM: Simple breakfast
  • 8:00 AM: Pindapata (alms round)
  • 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM: Work period and self-practice time
  • 11:00 AM: Main meal and clean up 
  • 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Self-practice time
  • 5:00 PM: Tea and allowable drinks
  • 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM: Evening chanting and meditation

Accommodation
Currently accommodation in the monastery is very limited. Apart from male and female dormitories in the main monastery building, the monastery also has a rented some accommodation about 800 meters from the main building. Visitors can be accommodated in either of the lodgings based on the prevalent situation. We request the cooperation of the visitors in this regard and encourage you to make the best use of whatever lodging is assigned. May this enable the cultivation of mental flexibility, especially if things are not exactly in line with one’s preferences.

Identification Requirement: Overnight visitors must bring a government-issued photo ID (e.g., Aadhaar card, passport). A copy will be retained for monastery records.

Duration of Stay: The initial stay period is 3 days, which may be extended depending on the visitor’s adaptability to the monastery’s routine and culture.

Guidelines for Visitors

  • Dietary Restrictions:The monastery is entirely vegetarian. Please refrain from bringing meat, fish, or eggs onto the premises.
  • Prohibited Activities: Smoking is not permitted within the monastery grounds.
  • Practice Philosophy: There is no prescribed meditation technique or formal teaching at the monastery. Visitors are encouraged to cultivate spiritual qualities such as effort, joy, contentment, patience, and faith, as emphasized by Ajahn Chah. Discussions with resident monks and independent Dhamma study are also available.

Detailed instructions: 
For someone arriving at Yamunanagar railwaystation:

  • From the railway station, please get to the (Jagadhri) bus stop. 
  • Yamunanagar has 2 bus stops – Yamunanagar and Jagadhri. You need to get to Jagadhri bus stop. 
  • From there please take a bus to Ranjitpur, the nearest bus stop to the monastery. The telephone number of the Jagadhri bus stop inquiry is mentioned below. 
  • Depending on the time of the day, it is possible that you may not get a bus directly for Ranjitpur. If so, please take one for Bilaspur. Bilaspur is well connected and it should be possible to get a bus easily. 
  • Once you get to Bilaspur (or just before you get there), telephone any of the two auto rickshaw driver’s whose numbers are listed below.
  • They can bring you from Bilaspur to the monastery (approximately 20 kms)
